2024 Louisiana Legislative Session Update
Dear GNOFN Members,
The 2024 Louisiana legislative session has ended. I’m reminded that at this year’s spring convening, GNOFN board co-chair Flozell Daniels highlighted the nuanced challenges that philanthropy faces as ever-changing public policies impact our communities. New laws passed in this year’s session will impact the people we serve across Climate Justice, Criminal Justice, Equitable Development, Health, Black Men & Boys, and Education—each one a focus of our Action Tables. Additionally, significant steps were taken to undermine access to democracy and transparent government. These outcomes point to why GNOFN is so important at this moment, as we push toward the 20th year commemoration of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Our model is based on the idea that informed philanthropy enhances collaboration and coordination among stakeholders, thereby deepening our impact and responsiveness to Greater New Orleans communities. As we stay nimble to meet our community's needs, we note that new laws can either create opportunities or bring challenges. This year’s legislative session brought significant changes that will impact Louisiana residents, especially those in oppressed and disadvantaged communities. As we were reminded at our recent convening, the good news is that our grantee and practice partners are leading this historic moment with wisdom, resolve, and high-impact strategies.
To help us all stay informed, below are some resources, policy recaps, and articles to help all of our members explore the new laws and their effects on GNOFN’s key areas of focus. Please share your thoughts on this year’s legislative session and other resources that might be helpful for our members by emailing me at This email address is being protected from spambots.
